“What the new year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the new year” ~Vern McLellan
We have officially gotten the first week of 2025 under our belts and I am charging into it head on with big goals for myself and my family. I’m not really into setting hard line resolutions, but goals to reach for are my jam.
First things first- this blog. I will be the first to admit that I let it slide far too often and go way too long without posting. I always say I am getting back at it and I truly do have good intentions, but your girl is tired and stretched thin with the mom and blue collar wife life. One thing that I do know is that writing brings my heart joy, and one thing I would like to do more of in 2025 is bring my heart joy, so here we are- writing a blog post in the first week of the new year! My goal moving forward is to get my thoughts and ramblings out to you every other Friday. Please don’t be shy about holding me to it!
My next big goal is this little slice of Earth David and I have claimed, aka the Huskisson Homestead. It’s a mess. It’s wild and feral, and I aim to tame her this year! I do realize that we inherited the feral disaster, however we’ve been here 2 years now and there is only so long I can blame the previous owner for her disheveled look. I do know the homestead esthetic is either very Instagram worthy, or let’s just say it, a bit jumbled hodge podge-ish. I would like the in-between honestly. Perfect, Instagram worthy is too stressful but I do like a pretty green yard and nicely maintained garden, which leads to the next goal.
My garden. To say last season was a massive disappointment is an understatement. My seedlings did amazing, spring was cold and wet so things got stunted, then the deer and the rabbits just went ahead and feasted on what was left. We have a good sized little herd of deer that seem to live right in this area. They are at about 5-7 strong now, and I helped keep them fat and happy last year against my will. David has planned a new fence for the garden area. A very tall fence- 7 feet high he says. We are also going to put something around the bottom like hardware cloth to keep those cute little bunnies out. There is also a rumor going around this house of a new greenhouse, but we shall see if that remains a rumor or comes to fruition. Cross your fingers for me!
Once we get the garden going strong again, I will be able to focus on preserving all of that delicious produce, which leads me to my next goal for the year. Expanding my preservation and cooking skills. I want to learn how to cook new things and I want to find new things to eat that are tasty and good fuel for my body. I have some new seeds on the list to try and I am very much looking forward to it!
For my final and probably most important goal, my family. I want to soak up as many moments with my girls as possible and actually enjoy them. I want to be ok with skipping the breakfast dishes in the sink in lieu of a trip to the local zoo. I want to ride our horses, go to some barrel races, spend our evenings at the roping pen, and check out every park within driving distance of our house. We finally have a family vacation planned for the early summer and to spend a few days away with my husband and kids makes me smile. I am feeling hopeful, refreshed, and almost giddy for the upcoming year, and I hope you are too.
